Services
At Hoag’s Hardware & Design, we focus on the space where engineering design meets fabrication.
Our goal is simple: help you turn ideas into parts that work, can be built efficiently, and don’t cost more than they need to.
We work with engineers, startups, and small manufacturers on projects ranging from early concepts to short-run production.
Mechanical Design & DFM
Good design isn’t just about meeting requirements — it’s about understanding how a part will actually be made.
We provide mechanical design services with a strong emphasis on Design for Manufacturability (DFM), helping identify opportunities to:
- Reduce part cost without sacrificing function
- Simplify geometries and tolerances
- Choose materials and processes that match real-world constraints
Whether you’re starting from a blank sheet or refining an existing design, we focus on solutions that make sense both on paper and in the shop.
CNC Machining (Prototype & Short-Run)
We specialize in prototype and short-run CNC machining where flexibility, accuracy, and communication matter more than volume.
Typical work includes:
- One-off and low-quantity machined components
- Precision parts for testing, fixtures, and assemblies
- Iterative builds where designs evolve between revisions
Because machining is integrated with design insight, we’re often able to suggest small changes that significantly reduce lead time or cost.
Custom Hardware & Fixtures
Many projects need something that doesn’t exist off the shelf.
We design and fabricate custom hardware, fixtures, and mechanical components tailored to your application, including:
- Brackets, mounts, and assemblies
- Test fixtures and tooling
- Specialized hardware for unique constraints
The focus is always on practical solutions that are robust, serviceable, and efficient to produce.
3D Printing & Scanning
Additive manufacturing and scanning can be powerful tools when used appropriately.
We offer:
- 3D printing for rapid prototyping and fit checks
- Design iteration and early validation
- 3D scanning to capture existing geometry or reverse-engineer parts
These tools are used strategically — not as buzzwords — to speed development and reduce uncertainty.
Fabrication & Assembly
For projects that extend beyond single machined parts, we support fabrication and light assembly, coordinating components into functional systems.
This includes:
- Fabricated components and subassemblies
- Fit-up, testing, and refinement
- Design adjustments based on real-world assembly feedback
Design Review & Cost Reduction
Sometimes the most valuable service is a second set of experienced eyes.
We provide design reviews focused on manufacturability, cost, and risk, helping identify:
- Over-tolerancing or unnecessary complexity
- Alternate materials or processes
- Opportunities to simplify production
- Areas where long-term reliability or maintenance needs might be improved
These reviews are especially useful before committing to production or sending a design out for quoting.
How We Work
- Small shop, direct communication
- No handoffs between design and fabrication
- Comfortable working from sketches, CAD, or existing parts
- Focused on solutions that are practical, manufacturable, and efficient
If you’re unsure where your project fits, that’s fine — many start that way. We’re happy to talk through options and help define the best path forward.
